Women in Optics

Dr. Sirona Valdueza
Researcher «Ramon y Cajal» at the Department of Electronics of University of Alcalá and former student of TecnOPTO.
This seminar was recorded on February 26th, 2018, in the Workshop “La Ciencia tiene nombre de mujer”

Mujer1Mujer2The II Jornada La Ciencia tiene Nombre de Mujer was held on February 26th at UMH to celebrate the International Day of Woman and Girl in Science. The purpose of this second edition is to attract female students to Engineering degrees. Recognized female Engineering professionals delivered outreach talks to an audience of about 200 high-school students. Prof. Carmen Vázquez, who talked about Photonics applications in engineering, and Dr. Sirona Valdueza, former student of TecnOPTO, were among the speakers.

After that, the attendees could experience hands-on engineering through several experimental stands, including «Velocity  speed detection using Doppler effect» and «Voice transmission by laser», among others.

The members of TecnOPTO, María del Mar Sánchez and Julia Arias, helped organized this activity in collaboration with Unidad de Igualdad of UMH, and TecnOPTO PhD student  Aaron Cofré gave a stand on photonics.

More details on the program can be found here. See the related video (in Spanish).

Pas UJIPascuala García talks about gender equity in the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at University Jaume I

Pascuala García gave a conference about gender equity in a training workshop session organized by the Doctoral School of the Universitat Jaume I – UJI, in Castellón.

Gender ESS

The SPIE Gender Equity Task Force was formed to identify how the professional environment of the optics and photonics community can better enable equal opportunities, rewards, and recognition for its members, independent of gender.

Maria del Mar was one of the sixteen professionals interviewed for the 2017 edition. The survey is the largest of its kind in the optics and photonics community, receiving nearly 10,000 valid responses and representing 105 countries and a wide range of disciplines. The results of this study can be download at the following link.

Paper in Revista de Física describing the Women in Light Sciences and Light Technologies exhibition

A new paper entitled Investigadoras en la luz y en las tecnologías de la luz (Women in Light Sciences and Light Technologies) has been published in the Revista Española de Física (Spanish Journal of Physics). This paper describes the exhibition with the same name that was developed to commemorate the International Year of Light, describing the life and work of 12 women that made great contributions to the science of light. This paper was written by Maria del Mar and Pascuala, in collaboration with Ana J. López-Díaz, from Universidade da Coruña, and Augusto Beléndez, from Universidad de Alicante.

María del Mar Sánchez participates at the II Workshop on Women in Engineering at University Rey Juan Carlos

On May 18th 2016, María del Mar Sánchez participated in the II Workshop on Women in Science & Engineering, held at the Politechnical School of Experimental Sciences & Technology, at University Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), Madrid.

Organized by Prof. Beatriz Romero, from URJC, this workshop is intended to encourage women to follow a career in science or engineering. María del Mar participated with the conference entitled «Women researchers in Light and in Light Technologies – Investigadoras en la luz y en las tecnologías de la luz». A video describing the workshop and interviews with the participants can be viewed at: link

Pascuala Garcia and Maria del Mar Sanchez met Jocelyn Bell at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Valencia.

Dr. Bell, renown astrophysicist famous for the discovery of pulsars, was invited to Valencia to give a conference within the cycle of seminars of the Faculty of Physics. Dr. Bell was one of the women selected for the Exhibition Women in Light Science and Light Technology. This exhibition coordinated by Pascuala García, and with the participation of María del Mar Sánchez, has been developed by members of the Group of Women in Physics of RSEF –  Real Sociedad Española de Física, and from SEDOPTICA – Sociedad Española de Óptica.

The exhibition was inaugurated in September 2015 at the SEDOPTICA meeting XI Reunión Nacional de Óptica, held in Salamanca, and it has been exhibited at many different locations, including the University of Valencia, and the University Miguel Hernandez, where it can now be visited at the hall of the building Arenales, until April 11th, 2016.

2016 calendar on Women in Light Science and Light Technology

Coordinated by Pascuala Garcia and with the participation of Maria del Mar Sánchez, this calendar summarizes the Exhibition on Women in Light Science and Light Technology, developed with the support of SEDOPTICARSEF, and SPIE among others, in commemoration of the International Year of Light.

This exhibition promotes the visibility of 12 women who contributed significantly to the development of light science and technology. Each month is devoted to one of these famous researchers.
